Charles F Stead is committed to be a leading force in the leather industry on matters of environment and sustainability of operations.

We have been a member of the Leather Working Group (LWG) since its inception pursuant to which we undergo full environmental audits on an 18 month rolling basis and we continue to strive to meet the very highest environmental standards.

Highest standards

We are proud of the advancements we continue to make in this regard on issue such as water and energy usage, notwithstanding the extra work (and therefore energy/sqft) which we have to put into our suedes to achieve the very highest quality.

Eco-Buck tannage

With our Eco-Buck tannage, we are at the very forefront of sustainable leathers. The tannage is metal free (not just chrome free) and the hides are sourced locally in the UK from grass fed stock, and the finished product is biodegradable pursuant to BS EN ISO 20200:2015.

Tannery operations

As regards the tannery operations themselves, in the UK we operate within and comply with some of the tightest regulations in the world with regard to waste water discharge. Tannery waste water is tested and monitored regularly by local water authorities.

Proud of our Suedes

In our suedes, we are proud to offer a renewable, sustainable, durable, versatile yet beautiful material. At the polar opposite of ‘fast fashion’, our suedes and leathers are designed to be enjoyed for decades offering classic elegance, durability and reparability.
